About Puss and Mew Distillery

Puss and Mew is a boutique gin distillery, slinging small batch craft gin in Melbourne’s East. Wondering where our name came from? It’s inspired by the story of an enterprising gin-slinger who created the world’s first vending machine to evade liquor licensing rules in the 18th Century. Some call him a crook. We call him a genius!

Our Distillery is one of the Eastern suburbs hidden gems, from the moment you walk in, you are transported to another world, tucked away in an oasis of elegance, comfort and relaxation. Our space offers a premium bar with friendly staff and bartenders who have a passion for the creation of delicious, one-of a kind cocktails you won’t find anywhere else. With an extensive and impressive signature cocktail menu, craft beers, spirits and local wines your guests will not be disappointed!

Private Functions and Function sizes

Our floor space can accommodate up to 60 seated guests or offer a cocktail function of up to 140 people. Puss and Mew can offer a range of options for setting up your event including the luxury of our beautiful leather Chesterfield couches and leather tub chairs as well as an array of bar tables, bar stools, tables and chairs. This space is perfectly suited for your next function and is equipped with full coverage of air- conditioning or heating depending on the interchangeable and unpredictable Melbourne weather!

Smaller Functions and Function sizes

For smaller functions of 15 or more we can offer set menus to cater for your group. This can be arranged for sit-down or cocktail style events. We are happy to tailor the event to your requirements. Please see below for menu selections.

Function Food Menu Selections

As well as the standard function food menu, Puss and Mew has a reputation for carefully-crafted signature charcuterie and cheese boards, this menu is designed for more intimate gatherings and has been inspired by our gin and the enjoyment of sipping on a craft gin or signature cocktail while grazing on beautiful fresh produce and sharing experiences with friends and family.

Finger Food

We require 5 working days’ notice of order prior to your event.

Food is available and will be served up to 9.00pm.
Prices and food selections may change due to wholesale increases and menu changes. An example of canape’s includes the following: mini quiches, mini pizzas, mini gourmet pies, meatballs, samosas, chicken tenders, pocket fries, mini souvlaki, sushi, calamari, cucumber, salmon and cream cheese bites, satay beef kebabs, chicken kiev bites, churros. 

DIETARY REQUIREMENTS Whilst we take the utmost care to cater for all dietary intolerances & allergies, our kitchen is not an allergen free environment. Traces of allergen may/will be present in all foods. Vg = Vegetarian GF = Gluten free V= Vegan

Entertainment

We offer a state-of-the-art sound system to get your party going so you can pump your own music playlist. We can assist you with recommendations and organisation of a DJ or band alternatively, you could arrange for your own DJ or Entertainment for your event.
In addition to this we have a fully integrated AV system for slide shows, presentations and speeches.

Decorations

Guests are welcome to bring their own decorations; however, all fixtures must be first authorised by management. No staples or tape is to be used on painted surfaces. Organisers will be able to have access to the venue 30 minutes prior to the event in preparation.

Function Conduct

It is a requirement of the venue that the organiser will conduct the function in an orderly manner. All normal venue policies, procedures, and legal responsibilities apply to all guests attending the event, including compliance to all responsible service guidelines and standards. The venue reserves the right to refuse entry and/or service to any guest in accordance with these guidelines. Minors are welcome to attend the functions only when accompanied by a legal guardian.

Damages

Please be advised that the organisers are financially responsible for any damage, theft, breakage, or vandalism sustained to the venue by guests attending the function. Should extra cleaning be required, the deposit will be surrendered.

The venue does not accept responsibility for damage or loss of the property or belongings left at the venue prior to or immediately after the function.

Cakes

Organisers are welcome to bring their own cake/cakes which can be stored in the kitchen on the day of the event. Lolly tables are also welcome; however, no other outside food or drink is permitted in the venue.

The Fine Print

Terms and Conditions Deposit and Minimum Spend

By putting down a deposit and locking in your function, you agree to adhere to the below terms and conditions. Please note in order to host your function we will be required to close our venue to the public therefore a minimum spend is required for all private functions.  The minimum spend is $6,000 for a 4 hour function. 

A $1,000 deposit will be taken upon booking for the event. This deposit will go towards your minimum spend during the event.

This minimum spend must be reached during your function and paid to the venue on the day of your event. In the event that this minimum is not reached, the deposit will be retained by the venue and not returned to the organiser.

The deposit will not be returned to the organiser in the event of a cancellation unless this is due to a COVID19 related State shutdown.

Security

Please note that for all private functions a security fee will be required. The cost of this will depend on the number of people, type of event and length of function.

Final Confirmation

Final numbers and food orders are required no later than one week prior to the function.

Function Times

Puss and Mew Distillery is open until 11:00pm. The minimum spend is based on a 4 hour function, for longer functions such as Weddings, an additional $1000 per hour will be added to the minimum spend.

We can hold private functions from Monday – Sunday at the following times:
Monday – Friday between the hours 4:00pm – 11:00pm
Saturday – Sunday between the hours of 12:00pm – 11:00pm
Please note in accordance with liquor licensing laws and Whitehorse City Council ordinances last drinks will be served by no later than 10:45pm

THE LEGEND

The great invention.

Puss & mew Gin was inspired by the legend of an enterprising gin-slinger by the name of Captain Dudley Bradstreet.

Bradstreet devised the world’s first vending machine to evade new liquor laws that restricted the sale of gin during the 18th Century. This took the form of an old tomcat in a window, which later became known as the puss & mew.

England’s thirsty masses would walk up to the statue and say “Puss puss, do you have any gin?”. The statue would meow, and a small drawer would open up in the cat’s mouth. The drinker would drop a coin, then Bradstreet would pour a shot of gin through the cat’s paw, straight into the pedestrian’s awaiting cup, inadvertently creating the world’s first vending machine.

Because Bradstreet was hidden inside the house, the police had no authority to catch him and the legend of the puss & mew was born. This story of ingenuity and invention has inspired the ethos of our house-made gin.
